Nadaburg's Enrichment Class 2001-2002
The Enrichment Class of Nadaburg Elementary School has completed the "Stowaway Project" created and hosted by Stevens Institute of Technology. Students have published their work on individual web pages. To view their work, click on the 'Student Work' link below.
This project is developed and managed by the Center for Improved Engineering and Science Education (CIESE) which is located at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey. You can learn more about this project and many other CIESE sponsored Internet-based educational activities by visiting http://k12science.org.
"This multidisciplinary Internet-based learning experience has been designed to expose students to real world problem solving through unique uses of instructional technologies. In particular, students will use real time data from the Internet to track a real ship at sea, determine its destination and predict when it will arrive. In addition, they will have the opportunity to monitor the weather conditions at sea and predict when rough weather might impact on the ship's arrival time."
Real-Time Data: Students were first assigned
a ship selected by the instructors. Each student learned how to track a
ship assigned to them using real-time data on the Internet. The ship was
tracked from its original location to the eventual port of call. Students
were also required to keep a journal containing the geographical location of
their ship, speed of travel, weather and wave conditions.
Language Arts: During the tracking of
their ship, students were required to communicate through e-mail and snail
mail, with their parents and contacts at the port of call. The e-mail included
an electronic greeting card to their teacher. To the delight and surprise
of the Enrichment students and with the assistance of a local firefighter,
some students received post cards from their port of call's local fire department.
Students were also required to read a book recommended by the Stowaway Project
and document similarities to their own stowaway adventure.
Social Studies: Students researched their
port of call thoroughly and documented all of the information in their journals.
They learned about geographic location, traditions, imports/exports, architecture,
history, clothing, climate, weather....
Something we added to the project: Students
created storyboards. They utilized an online tutorial and asked pertinent questions of the expert storyboard artist, Josh Sheppard, creator of the tutorial. Students learned what storyboarding
is and how to use a storyboard to effectively depict their experience as
a stowaway. Students have digitized their storyboards, created PowerPoint
presentations on their "Port of Call," and web pages to share their findings on the world wide web.
Student Presentations: Invitations to be sent to parents, community, administration, school board
members, and school staff for student project presentations. Each student
will present his or her own portfolio, journal, and storyboards.
Students Earn a Certificate of Completion: Students
will be given a "Certificate of Completion" when all work required by the Stowaway Project and the instructors has been completed. They will have put in 40 sessions at 45 minutes each for a total of approximately 31 hours.
Students go on a REAL cruise: Students
will have an authentic "at sea" experience by being aboard the ship, "Ecstacy", from "Carnival Cruise". The cruise
will be for four nights leaving from Los Angeles and going to Ensenada, Mexico.
The good news is the students will be guests and not "stowaways!"
