For the past 4 years, the Marine Corps Recruiting Station led by GySgt. Sean P. McElroy, Operations Chief, have conducted a day of mini "boot camp" for our junior high school students. This year, we had nearly 200 students participating, this was our largest group so far!  Students and staff members that participated in the boot camp were again given T-shirts to distinguish them from the rest of the campus as "boot camp" participants.

The purpose of this boot camp is to teach these students the importance of education, to think about their career goals for the future, and the discipline and hard work it will take to achieve their goals.  As well as, the importance of uniforms to achieve order and discipline.   There was an emphasis on good character traits this year.  This year was a  wonderful experience because we had a very distinguished guest  that  was willing to come speak about being a good citizen and continuing education.    The Honorable Judge Henry,   of  Wickenburg spoke to the boot campers and enjoyed some lunch with Mrs. Lemoine's first grade class.  Mrs. Lemoine's first grade once again sang for our Marines and special guests... I must say.. there wasn't a dry eye in the house!!!

Along with the motivational speaking and playing were several question and answer sessions. The students were able to ask the Marines questions about their jobs with the USMC, about their uniforms, and whether or not the marines are still in school. Gunny Mac answered all of their questions and demonstrated that he truly is a dedicated Marine.  He explained to the students honor, courage, and commitment are everything you need to succeed.  Gunny Mac then went on to define several important values that every Marine lives by, i.e. integrity, initiative, honesty, to name a very few.

Of course, there was  a physical part to the boot camp. Physical conditioning is necessary to keep a healthy mind and body. Boot Campers were drilled in the multi-purpose room and put into formation for the flag retiring ceremony.  The staff and students in grades K through 5 were gathered around the main floor and observed the ceremony.  The American Legion Color Guard were in position.  The American Legion Honor Guard then performed a "flag retiring and disposal ceremony" while the boot camp participants stood in formation and at attention. We're very thankful to our American Legion for their participation in our annual boot camp!

The boot campers were treated for all of their hard work with a delicious lunch provided by Martie and prepared by several volunteers.  Mrs. Kathy Welch was in attendance to offer assistance.
